After JBL was acquired by Harman, the quality of this once-premier brand has suffered. Audiophiles well-versed in stereo systems bemoan JBL’s descent into mediocrity. That being said, the higher-end JBL products have suffered a more dramatic loss of quality, and the JBL ES150P is still one of the 10 best home subwoofers in the price range of this review.

It has front-firing PolyPlas 10-inch woofer cone, set behind a removable grill, in a cabinet with a stylish and unique tapered design that sets it apart from other powered subwoofers. The ES150P has a few redeeming qualities, but it lacks some of the features common to the best home subwoofers we reviewed, like the BIC F-12 subwoofer and the Emotiva Ultra Sub 10.

The JBL ES150P has a satisfactory frequency-response range of 27Hz - 150Hz, which is adequate for home subwoofers in its class. Its Class D JBL amplifier has a continuous output of 300 watts and a dynamic peak output of 500 watts that is exceeded by only one of the powered subwoofers in our lineup, the Elemental Designs A3S-250. Its maximum output volume is around 110 decibels, which varies depending on the size of the room it is located in.

This home subwoofer’s cabinet is taller than it is wide, with a tapered body that is wider at the front. The construction quality is a little flimsy, and its owners complain that it is not as durable as it should be. The cabinet is available in two finishes: black ash and cherry, so it does offer some aesthetic options. Also, it is heavier than you would expect for a sub that is not built to last as long as it should.

Owners of JBL ES150P home subwoofers occasionally complain that the sound quality is poor, and that it buzzes when handling the bass frequencies, which is certainly not ideal. It has been designed to accommodate both musical tones and low-end sound effects, but it doesn’t handle either extremely well.

JBL ES150P home subwoofers have fewer features for tailoring the sound than the other powered subwoofers in our lineup. It does have rotary dials to control the volume level and crossover frequency, which can be set anywhere between 50Hz and 150Hz. The phase control is a switch that can only be set to either zero or 180 degrees, which limits your options for easy integration into your stereo system. Additionally, it only has one set of terminals to connect it to your sound system. You can either run a single line from an LFE sub out on your AV receiver to the left-channel LFE input or connect it with a stereo line out to the left and right channel line inputs on the sub.

ES150P home subwoofers are covered by a five-year warranty for the speaker and a one-year warranty for the electronic components. The JBL website has a FAQs page and downloadable PDF product manuals. You can contact technical support by phone or email. They responded quickly to our email and answered most of our questions.

Summary:

The JBL ES150P has an attractive design but fails to provide consistent, dependable sound quality. If you’re looking for more dependable home subwoofers, you may be more satisfied with the one of our higher-ranked subwoofers.
